Why I fall in love with the Island of Lefkada

Arriving to Lefkada as a foreigner, didn’t start as a love story. At first glance, and after a long drive from Athens, being tired and hangry, nothing seemed unique. It was a busy hour in Lefkada town and a good restaurant was the only thing I was really looking for.  The first impression of Lefkada town was just ordinary…

Where it all started…

I went to sleep early that night, and woke up at 5am, not my usual hour. After a great shower and a cup of coffee, and without much expectation, I went down for a morning walk. I started at Lefkada Town main pedestrian street. The quietness of this early morning hour together with the cold fresh air and soft morning light, finally woke up my senses…

My head was still down, so I noticed the little road stones – they were authentic, clean and beautiful. I could hear my steps and felt integrating with the stones. I was alone, but I could feel connecting with all the people who ever walked there. The buildings facades were looking at me, every one is different, in shape, in color, in texture. Even though, none of them was new or fancy, and it hit me again, it was real, and amazingly vivid – the magic was in the air… some of the old building and churches were just so special in their simplicity and beauty.

The sea

After that, I arrived to the pedestrian road along the sea, the sky was a pallet of pastel colors, the canal and sea water were so quiet and became a perfect mirror, the old boats were peacefully floating there and I had to tweak myself. That is when I knew I am falling in love…

It was much later that I discovered the breathtaking beaches, the magnificent mountains, the tiny romantic villages and all the other attractions, that is a story for another blog. In a nutshell – it all repeats the same theme – Lefkada is real, authentic and beautiful!

I love Lefkada!
